One to one mentoring and business support

Who can be helped?

Any small or medium sized, private sector business (SME) in Cornwall can receive help:

When?

  • When a business is starting up
  • When a business is planning to expand or diversify
  • When it is seeking funding from grant sources or from investors or lenders
  • When the owners simply want to make sure they are still on track
  • Or when the business is having difficulties

How?

One to one guidance and help with putting together a plan:

  • A marketing plan to help the business grow and increase profitability
  • An action plan to solve a problem in a particular area of the business
  • A full business plan which encompasses the whole operation of the organisation

Cost?

This service is free of charge. All that we ask of the client is that they work with us and contribute their time to the project and record this time. The value of this time counts as the matched contribution from the client.

Training for owners and employees

In addition to the one-to-one mentoring, the owners, managers and staff of SMEs can receive subsidised training under the Cascade project:

  • One day business seminars covering a variety of topics (nominal charge of £25)
  • Part time qualification courses run as evening classes or on Saturdays (fees vary but are subsidised)
  • Customised training - a training course can be designed and run to meet the client's particular needs (fees vary but are subsidised)

Business club

A business club open to all SMEs in Cornwall stages events 4 times each year. These events are held on a weekday evening in the College's lecture theatre. Each event has a keynote speaker or theme followed by a networking opportunity for attendees. (Free of charge.)

BUSINESS SEMINARS

Truro College Business Centre offers a programme of one-day business seminars. They are aimed at owners, managers and staff of businesses in Cornwall.

Topics

The seminars cover a variety of topics such as marketing, management, finance, customer care, public relations and handling the media, recruitment and employment law, health and safety, food hygiene, IT including use of the internet.

Each seminar provides focussed training which helps to develop the key skills necessary for the day to day running of a business.

Format of seminars

A programme of seminars is held in the spring and autumn each year. Each seminar is a self-contained, one-day event held at or close to Truro College. Most are held on weekdays, but a few which use specialist equipment such as the College's media facilities are held on Saturdays. They are particularly suited to busy individuals who are unable to commit to a long-term course. A buffet lunch is provided for all attendees.

Some of the seminars can lead to a certificated qualification such as health and safety or food hygiene. Others can count towards an Introductory Certificate in Management

Cost

These seminars are part of the College's Cascade project which is supported by the European Social fund. For all clients who work in a business which is based in Cornwall and which employs fewer than 250 people, and where the training is carried out for business purposes, the cost is just £25 per person per seminar. This is a non-refundable administration fee payable in advance.

For companies with more than 250 employees, the cost per employee attending is £75.

Where a qualification certificate is issued, there are registration and certification fees (£7.50 for health and safety, and food hygiene, £66 for management).
